Well Cat Visits

Well Cat Visits - Cat Specialist - Castle Rock, COWell Cat Visits are an important part of a healthy cat’s lifestyle. Routine or annual visits are not just an opportunity to “get the cat his shots.” Vaccination is important, but it’s only one part of ongoing healthcare for your cat’s lifetime. When your well cat visits us, our doctor will perform a head to tail examination. Our nurses will measure blood pressure and perform an ECG. For some cats, blood is taken to perform tests for specific diseases. These tests are also chosen based on lifestyle, age, and risk factors. Our overriding goal is to catch abnormalities early on, when they can be successfully treated. And yes, we will customize a vaccine protocol to your cat’s individual lifestyle. Healthy adult cats should see us for this visit once each year.

Kittens are the equivalent of children visiting the pediatrician . . . they need to be seen more often than adult cats. They are growing and changing rapidly. Their personalities are being developed for a lifetime, so it’s especially important to include information in these visits about play and socialization. And also like human babies, kittens just can’t tolerate a load of immunizations all at one time, so we have to spread them out over the first 2 to 4 months.

Senior Cats should be seen twice each year once they reach age 8. Cats age much more rapidly than people, at an approximate five to one ratio. At the tender age of 13, your cat is eligible to receive his full Social Security benefit! Old age is certainly not a disease, but old age precipitates disease. Dental disease, heart disease, diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and many cancers are more common in older patients. Most are NOT life-threatening, not even “quality” of life threatening if discovered and treated in the early part of the cat’s senior years.

Senior wellness visits routinely include an EKG. It's a simple, painless test that records the heart's electrical activity. With each heartbeat, an electrical signal spreads from the top of the heart to the bottom. As it travels, the signal causes the heart to contract and pump blood. The process repeats with each new heartbeat.

A Brief Word about “Fraidy Cats:” Many cats are seriously stressed out at being transported to and seen at a veterinary hospital. Everything we do at Cat Specialist is geared toward making the visit, from the cat’s perspective, as stress-free as possible. You will indeed notice the difference when your cat can’t see, hear, or smell dogs in the building. You’ll notice the difference in the size and style of our examination rooms, geared exclusively for cats. But the single most important thing you will notice is the calm, effective technique our staff uses in dealing with these cats. All our efforts to examine and treat your cat have the cat’s best interest in mind. We think the feline species is amazing!
